So folks, how's it going with the promotion of our little german hopsitality page here?

Did anyone had luck already? If not, let us keep it a bit more alive and get some things done!

We could start writing stuff in English rather than in German, so we can teach some of our members here! Actually, that could be an idea! We could animate some of our members to start writing in English, just for practise!

What do you think? But, we are not going to translate for you guys stuff for school or similar! Ok?!?! Not like, "please translate this and that into English..."! It's not gonna happen!

Let me know what you think, and maybe suggest some topics!

why not starting off the globalization by changing the webpage name to hotelfach.com? (However I guess no other nation around the world might use the word "hotelfach" the same way we do)

Maybe you should reconsider the whole idea about having an international hoteliers forum?

I appreciate the basic idea and would not mind writing my comments rather in english than in german however there are mainly loads of german hospitality students who use this site to exchange their ideas.

Due to the matter of age and experience of our readers I would assume that many of them are struggling to adress their issues in a foreign language rather than using their mother tongue which they feel comfortable with.

Did you ever check out the forum on www.ehotelier.com? Is that similar to what you guys are aiming for? When I read their user comments I often get the feeling that their responses are coming across harsh, shortened, not much into detail and without any personal touch.

However when you join hotelfach.de you will get a warm welcome and loads of input and new ideas regarding your issues due to the matter of fact that this site up to date is specialised mainly in covering the information needs of young german students just starting off their hotelcareer.

Maybe this site needs to grow up alongside its users however I recommend to give it a second thought what are you actually aiming for!?

You might create a double forum - one part german one part english - and it might be very difficult to link both with eachother. Especially due to the language barrier you might exclude a lot of users here who will not be able to follow the discussions anymore and therefore might loose their interest in this site. And are you going to advise users in future to search for topics in both languages then?

Furthermore from my point of view I was always looking forward to read something in german when I was abroad rather than using my day to day language which was english as some kind of relaxation too.

I guess there are loads of other things to be considered when moving this forum to the next level and I am looking forward to all comments made by our fellow users with regards to this debat on principles.

Regarding the fact that most hospitality students here speak German doesn't mean, that they should only speak German!

To be honest with you, I think it's kind of bad that people working in the hospitality industry are not able to communicate in simple English with the guests. We are the ones who the guest is asking in a foreign country if they need assistance. Who if not us should help them?

I tell you all something. When I was on vacation from university (like 2 years ago) I went through Berlin's 5 Star hotels to find a nice one where I could invite my parents for a brunch (it was a Christmas present). Instead of asking questions in German I did it in English, just to see if an employee of a 5 star hotel is able to understand and communicate in English. I have to tell you, that out of around 7 hotels, only half were able to understand me. The other half had employee's who were so shocked and scared to even try to speak in English that they had to call a Manager.

I am sorry, but that was really not what I was expecting. I thought that when someone works in a luxury hotel English should be a must! But I was wrong.

I won't tell you which hotels had trouble, but at that time the Hilton, the Regent and the Radisson had Front Office staff that was able to switch from German to English instantly and have a conversation with me.

What I am trying to say is, that we don't want to make it something like a 2 class forum, where the ones who speak English can contribute to both parts, whereas the other ones only in the German section.

This is supposed to get the people to try it and just go ahead. Everyone can practise here and use the learned during work or private life.

And I don't think, that we should change the name to hotelfach.com!

In addition I don't believe the members will loose interest in this site, rather be motivated to start learning English and getting better in it!

So, please, everyone who wants to say something, don't be shy, try! We won't judge your English levels, we will try to help you guys to improve. You only can benefit from this here, give it a chance!

I think this English part is a good idea. We'll have to see how many people will use this part of this forum.

My mum's Welsh and I'll go and visit my family in Britain in about a week. Lookin forward to it 🙂

I'll begin my four-weeks work experience in two weeks. It's the hotel I've always wanted to work in. Been to try on the uniform and all the people are soooo friendly, feelin part of the family already.
Hope everything will turn out alright.

Absolutely not, these to forums are not comparable. Hotelfach.de is much more personalized, because the people who are posting are all linked to their account. As well over here there is no need for a moderator approval of postings before they are made publicly visible. Hotelfach.de is one big family and Alex is our all Daddy 😀 The feeling over here is different you´re not only one out of 100.000. I think this will not change in the future.

I also like the idea to have a English section. It will help people who would like to train and develop their English skills a little bit by writing in English. Also it might open the door for our not German speaking colleagues from around the world.

Maybe we can make it happen, that people on google.com or google.co.uk will find this part of the forum by searching for such words like "hospitality forum", "hotel forum", etc.?

It's a very good idea and i try to find the right words for this thread. Well, my englisch is under all pig 😉 (little joke).
It's a good possibility for me to improve my englisch skills. Especially for me. I had only three years school-englisch.
I'll keep an eye on this thread.

It’s a bad accuse for my English. I’d like it more to speak than to write. After some years of practising English on seagoing vessels my English is not the best.

I want to invite every employee in the hospitality branch to use this thread to brush up his/her English.

As you see in the following posts (following your post), most people take it, as it is meant to be - a chance to write something in English, to practice and improve (!) writing skills in a foreign language and maybe just to read something in English ...
I don't know the other forum you mentioned, but I'm very happy about the comments regarding the differences. 🙂

This part of the hf.d-board is meant to be an additional offer for everybody, who wants to communicate in English - just for fun.
Maybe there will be the time, when English-natives will have a hospitality-related question: But I'm da** sure, there will be professional answers then. 😀
However, the idea is not to create an international board for hoteliers. I think, there are already enough of it (as you named it). The idea (thanks again to Patrick) is, to offer our young professionals another chance to improve their skills ... if they want to! (If not, there are at least five people who will have fun in this board ... 😉 )

But as you mentioned the aims and/or "target-/usergroups" of this website:
You are right - the main content of the site "aims" to young and learning professionals. But this site started, when I was an apprentice (I guess there is no real word for "Azubi"). As the basic facts don't change much, I tried to move the board more and more into the professional section. And I'm kind of proud and happy, that people like sakura, Andy, Patrick, ... (and much much more) are having a "home" here. Of course there are still a lot of questions about the apprenticeship posted.
But over the years I definitely see the changes to topics like business schools, career decisions and chances abroad. And this is the section, where this part of the board belongs to.

Hotelfach.de will never be - and doesn't want to be - an international discussion-board. But I'm very happy about every professional, who shares her/his experiences with the "Nachwuchs" (my dictionary is still lost in some box). And I am proud to see the users, who "grow up" with hf.de and stay afterwards to give something back.

Of course, this English section is quite boring for you. But I hope for some interested people it will be a nice and welcome additional "feature". 🙂

Or what about standard handlings to do in a special department (like setting up a table)?!
